A couple of years ago, a US-based survey came out reporting that over 50% of young people in the country now identify somewhere under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. Many people were shocked by these numbers, and assumed the survey methodology must have been shoddy. But I took it as a sign of just how many people from prior generations had to be (and still are) closeted, relative to people who have grown up in a more tolerant place and time. I have no idea what the actual percentages would be in a world free of shame and persecution — we are so, so far from that, even in the best of places — but I bet it’s much higher than any of our available stats show. This article highlights so clearly how big the closet remains, and how little collective power we have in general, especially on a global scale.
