Art is subjective and preferential. Skill isn’t, or at least not entirely — and I won’t deny DFW could write himself out of a paper bag and then some. He was talented, charming, winning, witty, and smart — and that helped him accumulate a lot of power and repute, which made it easier for him to behave badly without consequence. In a lot of ways, I think a talented or creative abuser is a thousand times worse for the world than one who is difficult to love. I still love a lot of stories in Girl with Curious Hair.
