I actually do talk about this in the piece in several places. There are structural reasons why teachers do this to students. We teachers aren’t taught to think about our student’s barriers. We often are people who excelled in school ourselves, so we are not good at understanding those who don’t. There are reasons why teachers are guilty of not accommodating their students.

That does not make it okay. It still needs to change. This essay is an attempt to change it by educating educators about what they are missing. I’m not going to excuse behavior that can change for the better, but being un-accommodating does not make a teacher evil or bad. It just means they have some learning to do.
