I completely agree! People form parasocial relationships and project the expectations of a "community" onto a digital following when they are socially starved and longing for deeper connection. And of course digital communication can build real relationships -- I have plenty of online-only friendships -- but social media preys on us by creating illusory ones. And yes, totally agree that it's not unique to young people -- the popularity of Q Anon really speaks to how many lonely people online of all ages were desperate to find belonging on facebook, etc.
