I understand you’re speaking from your own firsthand experience, and that experience is a source of wisdom and is valuable, but anyone who is a proponent of harm reduction as a recovery/symptom management strategy would disagree with you here. And so would anyone who studies the psychology of changing human health behaviors. If you want someone to change a harmful act, the solution is not to punish them or neglect them thoroughly, in the hope that they just up and decide to try something completely different to make the pain stop. That logic is akin to conservatives believing that giving teenagers the HPV vaccine encourages them to have risky sex. Helping people to suffer less acutely is not synonymous with enabling.
