In some cases, taking care of ourselves means knowing when and when not to reveal information that can be used against us. I've tried opening up to therapists before, first about little things, and that's often blown up completely in my face. From that I learned not to touch the hot stove again. Thankfully, there are many other places in my life where I can find healing, genuine connection, proactive support, and the love and purpose that I need to be able to carry on. I also don't fully believe that depression is always something that needs to be cured or treated (in other words, I don't think the pathological lens necessarily applies to me in this realm anymore). For a time, depression was a destructive, painful force in my life that I wish I could have found better help in navigating, it's true. But today, I am a different person, with more tools and experience, and I can carry this shadow around with me rather than having it drag me behind it. And that's fine.
