Thank you for including a mention of the Pope’s transphobia here. It really surprises me, how often I see queer people and our allies celebrating this Pope for saying a few very tepid, noncommittal statements that they want to believe show tolerance. The media rewards him for it, and the misinformation continues to spread. This isn’t what actual progress toward queer justice looks like. This isn’t acceptance or love. It’s just a quiet rebranding. The same kind of manipulative move a lot of Churches are pulling these days — they don’t want to have the reputation of being hateful, but they sure as hell don’t want to confront the hatred embedded in their policies or their own hearts, either. It makes queer Christians and queer former Christians feel like we’re crazy.
