Like you, I sought refuge in libraries as a child -- the realm of the imagination was the one place where I could truly be me, and could push my thinking beyond the borders of what my small Ohio town made available to me. It's really an illustration of how badly things have gotten that a librarian working today couldn't be as openly supportive of books that affirm diversity as your librarian was able to be when you were young.
