Thank you for this response James! I'm glad to hear your friend is in a liberal arts program that hopefully is helping him rejuvenate and rediscover his passion. Though of course those programs can be punishing too! Some departments just have an incredibly toxic culture of overwork, and it really chews people up and spits them out, then blames them for not having what it takes to succeed, supposedly.
