Thank you so much for adding this historical and cultural context James! It's definitely got to be true that for a lot of gay trans men, wanting to be relatively hairless has got to be influenced by a lot of the same forces it is for cis gay men seeking a twinky appearance. Critiquing male beauty standards in the gay community feels so much more complicated than critiquing body standards placed on cishet women. Even something like the emphasis on maintaining a muscular, fit appearance can't be criticized as mere superficiality, given the reasons why it rose up in the gay male community (fitness magazines being one of the only sources of smut in the 50s and 60s, aiming to look fit as a reaction to the HIV epidemic). and I think thats probably also true with body hair or hairlessness? So much to it!
