Thanks for giving the piece a shot even though you went into it expecting self-pity. I think it probably speaks to something meaningful that self-pity is what you expected...I think the ableism in our culture teaches us to feel ashamed of our sadness, that resenting the unfairness of the world makes us bitter and broken, all kinds of nasty things like that. I can find self-pity very grating myself, so on one hand I completely get it, but I also wonder how much ableism has tainted what even think counts as self-pitying, you know what I mean?
