Thanks for your comment Jezra! I’m in the middle of fighting with a bunch of less empathic people about this on Twitter, so your support is just what I needed. I am not a woman; I speak on behalf of myself as a nonbinary person who has been assaulted, and I believe it’s important to emphasize that women, men, and people of other genders are all victims of sexual assault. It’s not a coincidence, of course, that the perpetrators of assault are almost always people with societal power — men, yes, but also white people, able-bodied people, cis people, and so on.
A lot of women understand from firsthand experience what sexual assault is like, and I feel for all of them deeply. But some of the people who have come to me to fight about this survivor’s account have been women. It’s so sad that there are so many people who refuse to trust victims the second it becomes inconvenient. It’s astonishing to me that people don’t get it yet. Anyway, thanks for your message.
