The students I discuss in this essay did have university-approved disability accommodations. But those accommodations are typically quite limited in breadth, and many professors are quite hostile to them. Please also keep in mind that access to a diagnosis is influenced by race, gender, and class. Even at a university, more privileged students are more likely to get the support they need. I trust my students when they tell me they are struggling. I do not require medicalized power structures to tell me I should give someone compassion.
