The University I teach at is Jesuit, and time and time again I am dismayed by how their use their faith identity as an excuse to mistreat people. They fought off the adjunct union on religious grounds — treating secular professors as “ministerial” figures, similar to the trick pulled here. They deny students and employees health insurance coverage for birth control or gender transition services. All while claiming to be pro LGBTQ as an institution. I think you’re right that inertia allows the bigotry of the Catholic Church to continue — and money. No school wants to alienate traditionally minded Catholic donors. Which is why your call for concerned parents to withdraw — and take their money with them — is so needed.
