This is super fascinating! In another book, Graeber talks about how we all practice communism with our families or close friends, and Rebecca Solnit writes in her book A Paradise Built in Hell about how groups of people come together to pool resources, forget previous prejudices and infighting, and look after one another in the face of natural disasters and the like. I think these more egalitarian, caring ways of looking after one another are kind of always just around the corner, we long to be able to be so generous and supported but it can feel impossible to do so now.
