Understanding the causes of behavior does not excuse the behavior. It doesn’t make all behavior equally good. But it does give us an idea of the systematic changes that need to be made to prevent the behavior in the future.

If kids with ADHD consistently get worse grades bc they miss assignments, for example, the solution is not to just ignore the missing assignments and give them a good grade anyway. The solution is to change how we handle setting, reminding people about, and enforcing due dates.
