When I was in school in the early 2000's, multiple friends of mine were hate-crimed on school property, only to be told by the administration that their visible queerness was a "distraction" that had provoked the problem. It was awful. It's terrible that for how much some things have changed, in some parts of the country, these dynamics still play out every day, and have been for decades.
