You don’t owe anyone time spent reading shitty comments. Putting your writing out in the world requires forethought, care, editing, passion — things rarely evident in tossed-off hateful or unsubsantive comments. Just because someone choose to read your work doesn’t mean you must give them your eyeballs in return. This is true of benign readers & commenters, too. You only have so much time and energy. Your writing is a gift and an act of service. You don’t owe anything to the people who benefit from your gift — or from those who hate your gift.
